Hover Ball

Hovering Ping Pong Ball.

Is a hair dryers force is strong enough to keep a ball in the air? To test this experiment supplies are needed, how to set up and what to do is the most important thing to know, observing and giving answers to any hypothesis will help to find the answer to this question, finally why this happened and other experiments that you could try out.
Supplies Needed:
Ping Pong ball
Hair dryer

Plug the hair dryer into the wall and point the fan upwards. Place the ping pong ball on the fan of the hair dryer or you could put it on when it’s going either way it works. Turn the hair dryer on and watch the ball hover in the air.

When observing, very noticeable things popped up like when the hair dryer is going and the ball is thrown in it seems to bounce back and start balancing in the middle of the fan. If it starts on the fan and the Hair dryer is turned on the ball starts to slowly pull itself up so it’s not so close to the fan. Would it work with a solid ball and not a hollow one?

The key to this experiment is the force of the hair dryer. When it is pointing up the ball is able to balance if it is pointing in any different direction the experiment should fail. The hair dryer is strong enough to hold a ping pong ball but isn’t as strong as gravity when it comes to heavier kinds like a tennis ball or a cricket ball.

Other Experiments:

Try it with two hair dryers, put one facing up and one facing down causing the ball to stay in the middle of the two. Or point the two hairdryers at each other and see if it stays up then. If you are too advanced try and balance two ping pong balls on one hair dryers.

Heated Air

Heated Air
What  happens when air heats up? Think of an experiment and test it to see if the answer pops up. There are 4 paragraphs giving clues to answer this question , paragraph 1 will be about the supplies needed, 2 is explaining what to do when ready, 3 is a paragraph about observing and giving answers to any hypotheses brewing in the mind, 4 will reveal all the secrets, how it all happened and what caused it.
To carry on with the experiment, supplies will be needed:
1. tub full of hot water
2. a tub full of lukewarm or room temperature water
3. 2 fizzy bottles
4. 2 balloons.

Place the two tubs outside incase of any spillage. Wrap the mouth of balloon over the mouth of the fizzy bottle. Do this with the leftover balloon and bottle. Make sure the balloons are tight so no air escapes. The experiment can now start!

Immerse both bottles into separate crates. Something very noticeable will have popped up, the lukewarm water does nothing to affect the balloon. As for the other bottle that was forced into the hot water would have made the balloon blow up without using a pump or a human mouth. There is no trick, swap the bottles around to see if it does the same thing. The bottle that was once in the hot water is now in the lukewarm water. This made the balloon deflate. Same for the other bottle that was once deflated will now be slowly inflating.

By observing, there should be an idea of what happens when air heats up inside a bottle. If it still continues to circle the mind then try it once more. The balloon doesn’t seem to blow up as much as before. This is because the hot water would have by now cooled down. How does this affect it? The key is how hot the water needs to be.

When the bottle is immersed in the hot water it makes the balloon inflate by itself. The reason for that is the air inside the bottle is trapped when you put the bottle in hot water the particles expand which causes movement. The only place they can go when they are expanding is in the balloon because it is flexible material. That is why the balloon blows up. Why doesn’t the room temperature water make the balloon blow up? It is because the water isn’t hot enough so the balloon stays in a state of inertia. What happens when air heats up? The particles expand causing the balloon to blow up.

Above is my second copy. W did a second copy so we could play around with the writing and make it more interesting for the reader. Below is my first copy.

Success criteria:

Write an explanation that explains clearly to the reader

include title and intro that states your topic and maybe asks a question

include a summary statement that links with the intro

Write the body of the text in order using some of the key words - Suggest the sequence of the experiment  clearly - firstly, after that finally.

Include some topic-specific science vocab

Show how the process happens by using continuous present tense?  This will mean using lots of ‘is’ and ‘are’

Locky

When I walk in the lounge and all the lights are out I suddenly see two shiny black dots move around the room. They’re moving everywhere almost unable to be catched. I realised that I have seen these before. It's Lockys beady eyes. He rubs his head against my leg as a sign of he wants the light on. I flick the switch and turn around to see Locky rolling around on the floor. His black and white curls seem like he has been coughed on by the fire and ashes have gone everywhere. His wagging tail shows me that he is happy to see me and wants a pat. I look at his long curls that droop to the floor and wonder if it’s time to get a haircut. I only came out to get a drink of water so I turn off the light and everything becomes complete darkness once again. I see the beady eyes following me back to the bedroom. He quickly and quietly sneaks past me and claims half the bed all to himself.

Throughout the night I can feel his ears twitching. He tries to wipe his drool on my arm but seems to get the blankets instead. The only thing that gets me was the rebound of his scaley tongue trying to climb back into his mouth.
I rose out of the bed the next morning and stretch my arms out as far as they go. Locky is already up, probably in the kitchen waiting for someone to stack his bowl full of dog biscuits. I walk towards the door, suddenly he pounces out from under the bed. His back is arched and and his paws are flat on the ground. It seems like he is trying to tease me into playing with him. I grab his chewed up tennis ball and throw it out the back door. He picks up his body and scrambles to get outside. Within a second he his crouching by my feet again. I decide to pat him instead, his curls have a chalk feeling to them but thats just the weekly knots. He jumps up with his paws pressed against my legs. They feel as soft as a feather pillow. He rolls over and you can the bald patch around his stomach. His belly started jumping up and down like a vibrating toothbrush.

He gets very impatient and starts barking like a huge threatening guard dog. He is no where near the size of a guard dog though. He turns to the side and pulls his body up off the ground. The whimpering starts. It carries on for as long as you can tolerate it. The untuned horn noise seems to get louder and louder. Angrily, I turn around and pet him. He start to breath heavily as a sign of him getting his way.

Gravity VS. My Force

Tuesday 15th our class decided to step up to gravity and see who could keep their arms up for the longest. It didn't take long, half the class had given up within 3 minutes. As for Thea, Phoenix and I we were on fire. Literally we had been holding up our arms for so long that it started to burn. To stay in the competition we had to keep our arms up above our shoulder length, they warn’t allowed to bend and finally our fingers had to be straight. Time went by and the pain seemed to spread. We started 11:50 and us 3 finished as a draw at 12:40. It was such a relief to finally put my arms down. The pain lasted throughout the day but it was all worth it. I think this was a great way to show how powerful gravity is and how no one is able to defeat it. At first I thought it was a fun activity then it turned into an extremely hard competition. In the photo below I am trying to do my work as well as keeping in the competition.

Flexability

Monday The 14 our class tested ourselves and how flexible we are. To test how flexible we are, we created our own equipment that included a plastic box and a piece of wood, longer than 60 centimes. You place the piece of wood on top and draw the measurements. 30 centimeters on the negative side and 30 centimeters on the positive side. For our first try I got 11 centimeters on the positive side of the ruler. I tested my flexible skills with Poppy, Thea, Daniel and Charlotte. The highest mark was Thea's, she got 18 centimeters positive on Monday. On Friday we will be trying this to see if we improve our flexibility skills. Every day in between we did hamstring and lower back stretches to try and get a better mark. I have improved by 1.5 centimeters. Others improved by 5 centimeters or more! Only a few decreased.

Sailing

Words: sailing, starboard, catastrophe
The wind blew heavily and the glass shattered. Henry and Sam decided the best place to be when a storm was brewing was out in the open. The only place that seemed safe was the lake. The boys had no knowledge of what to do or how to sail a boat but they had seen many T.V shows about it. They went with their gut and got on the boat . They sat there for awhile because they didn’t know you had to row to get the boat to move there was always a motor that made the boat move. Without knowing they still sat there waiting for the boat to start and it did finally not the way they had planned but it started alright. The tides of the lake became bigger and bigger drifting them into the middle of the lake. The boys panicked, the storm was getting worse and the boys thought that they needed to lighten the load so they threw the paddles overboard. The weight of the boat didn’t make a difference so they sat there asking themselves why they threw the paddles overboard, starboard and not portside.

An hour went past and the storm was still going, not as bad as before but there was heavy rain and shrieks of thunder now and then.  The boys sat on either side of the boat mocking each other and blaming each other for the whole thing. With no way to get back to shore they had nothing to do. Henry finally decided to break the fight say that it was no ones fault it was just a bunch of bad luck! “No, it is way more than that it is a catastrophe!” The day passed with the boys listing what it was. Whatever it was.

Darkness started to appear the boys shivered with fear and because they were cold. They couldn’t help but to say sorry. Saying sorry wasn’t going to take them back to shore though and they both knew that. They snuggled next to each and drifted off to sleep dreaming of happy places. In the time that they slept another storm brewed and left only this time it floated them back to shore.

In the morning Henry thanked sam for sailing them back to shore and Sam took full responsibility for it but he knew he didn’t do it. His thoughts were  that Henry was just saying that so Sam would be as cool as him but Henry didn’t do it either. No one thanked the storm.

Bears

Bears
2. What is your favorite bear?  Milly
3. Have you touched a bear before? -sam
1. What encouraged you to start liking bears?- Heith.
4. Bears are often found in myths and many cultures connect with them spiritually.  Why do you think this is?  Mrs Roil.

There are many different species of bear, this includes the Brown bear, Asian black bear, Sun bear, Giant panda, Spectacled bear, Indian sloth bear, and finally the Polar bear. The atlas bear is one of the subspecies of the brown bear, which is the only bear native to Africa. Sadly the Atlas bear has been extinct since the 1870s. The most widespread species is the brown bear, which comes from Western Europe eastwards through Asia to the western areas of North America. The American black bear is restricted to North America, and the polar bear is restricted to the Arctic Sea. All the remaining species are Asian.

Ever since I was little girl I tried forcing my mum to buy me a bear, she took it the wrong way and brought me a stuffed toy. I always said we could keep a real bear in the shed with a dog bowl of water. She refused.  I first started liking bears when I was 1 and a half when my grandad started hunting. He read me heaps of stories about bears in America and how he was going to travel there and be the first of his friends to kill one. When I was little I was convinced that a grizzly bear was the only bear in the world. I found out not long after that there are other bears and I then decided that sun bears are my favourite. I like the very long tongue that sunbears use, and how they stand on their back legs to look around.  I was lucky enough to feed a sun bear at the Wellington zoo. The zookeeper said when sun bears are tired they are very restless.

Because of their spirit-like appearance, spirit bears hold a place in the oral stories Scientists have found that black bears are not as effective at catching fish as white bears, as the white bears are less visible from the perspective of the fish. While at night the two colours of bears have similar success rates at catching fish, such as salmon, during the day the white bears are 30% more effective. Which is why the white kermode bear is most known as the spirit bear.
The Kermode bear was named after Francis Kermode, former director of the Royal B.C. Museum, who researched the subspecies and a colleague of William Hornaday, the zoologist who described it.

Bar graph test results

This is all the same scores but they have been transferred to a bar graph. The bar graph works better because it is easy to read and doesn't take a lot of thinking. I prefer this graph to the pie graph.

To get my average score or my mean I had to gather all my scores and add them together. This equaled 50. Next I divide my score by 5 because that's how many days we did the test for. My result or average score was 10/10.

If I tried doing this with 5 different scores, possibly 3, 9, 7, 8, 5. I would then do the same and add them all together which equals 32. Next I divide it by 5 because of how many days I did the test. My mean or average score would be 6 and 2 fifths.

This is my scores used on different graphs

Pie graph test results

Everyday for the last 2 weeks we have been taking a family of facts test. We had to turn our 5 best scores into a percentage. To get our graph looking the best we had to have a title and the days of the week.  I think that the pie graph wasn't the best way to show my results because it doesn't show my markings the best way and isn't as easy to read.

New Zealand Persuasion story

I am here to tell you why you and your family should travel to New Zealand and not Alaska for their holiday. To start off, New Zealand has had over 2.4 million tourists coming and going with smiles on their faces and one of the reasons for that is our national parks cover 30,000 square kilometres with natural scenery. Alaska on the other hand, has only had 1.63 million tourists because of their cold weather and snow storms that cause frostbite. So I have decided to take part in convincing people to visit New Zealand for their family friendly holiday. The way I am going to do that is to tell you the three best ways to spend your holiday.Number 1# enjoy all the activities we have to offer, number 2# engage in the great weather, visit our native animals and plants, number 3# how to get around.

There are lots of amusing things to do in New Zealand from sports to scenery, the hardest thing to do is to choose what to do first. If you’re into extreme sports, skydiving, hot air ballooning, skiing, cycling, and hiking are only some of the thing you can do in New Zealand. If you want to relax,  a scenic flight is what you need, for $230 you can fly from  the Bay of Plenty to all the way across the Northland. Another way to capture moments with great scenery would be to visit any of the 250 Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogy locations.  If you don’t feel like any of that why not whale watching? Or if that seems too boring, get a ticket to see New Zealand's rugby team (the All Blacks) beat every other team competing.

Of course to do all these things you need great weather which New Zealand has. Sometimes rain can interfere but usually it is sunny. Did you know, New Zealand would usually have around 2,000 hours of sun a year and daylight can last until 9:30? Sun isn’t the only thing that attracts tourists our native animals and plants do too. If you want to catch a glimpse of Kiwi before you leave, visit rainbow springs or you could try swimming with dusky dolphins at Kaikoura, see the Kea at Mt Cook, visit the tuatara also known as the tiny dinosaur. We have native plants as well, actually 80% of our flora in our forests are native, this 80% includes Kowhai trees, Rimu, The giant Kauri, and much more.

New Zealand is a lovely place, catching a plane or a ride on a cruise is a great way to travel here. There are exactly 29 airports that provide planes that can take you to and around the country. You could try crossing Cook Strait with bluebridge at the cost of $51 per adult. Other ways you can get around New zealand is to rent a Motorcycle, car, or even travel by train.  There are themed highways that show lots of New Zealands best landscapes and scenes, It is a great way to keep the family awake on a trip.

One more reason of why you should come here is because you are less likely to die here, over in Alaska many people die from bear attacks, frost bite and even avalanches in the mountains.

If I were you I would consider staying longer because of all the time consuming activities New Zealand has to offer. I hope my story has persuaded you to travel to New Zealand for your holiday and not Alaska.

The wolf in the wardrobe report

The Wolf In The Wardrobe by Susan Brocker. This book is an excellent book it really captures the reader. I enjoyed reading this book because it had so many interesting adjectives and explains every little detail in every sentence. This book would be classed as one of the best books I’ve read.

I think the wolf in the wardrobe is a very dramatic book. The main characters have been very thought out and are all very different. The characters are Finn, Lupa the wolf, Finns nana Eva, Finns farther, Finns mother, Pam, Cackles the clown, and Andy, Finn's best friend. This book really sucks you in, I would certainly consider reading it if you haven't. I would rate this book  5/5 and would like to see how the author planned this whole story out. It has a great beginning, middle and end and would probably be most liked by kids ages 7-13.

In this story Finn visits a circus with a horrible clown that treats the wolves miserably. One wolf escapes and Finn is lucky enough to find her before the clown. It doesn’t end that fast, the clown tracks Finn down and threatens to kill him and the wolf..... Read more to find out what happens and how Finn deals with the clown.

Susan Brocker has written a few other books that include Brave Bess and the Anzac Horses, The drovers quest, Restless Spirit, Saving Sam, and Dreams of Warriors. She wrote most her books about horses and dogs because they are her favourite animals.

To find more of her books visit her website at http://www.susanbrocker.com/index.html. Her website tells you all the books she has written and what she likes. It explains what the books are about and how to contact her.

Puia Hangi

How to cook a Puia Hangi:

Step 1: First you need to find a location where the puia or the hot water pools are hot enough. Try the Southern end of Lake Taupo, there’s a little town there, called Tokaanu with 2 extremely hot Puias, boiling geysers, and bubbling mud pools.
Step 2: Gather your favourite food, it could be pork, potatoes, pumpkin, or even stuffing. Cut your vegetables up not too small but not too large.
Step 3: Wrap all your food in tin foil so when it’s cooking it won’t loose any flavour. The reason we cook it in tin foil is because, cooking glad wrap would melt and leave your food tasting like plastic.
Step 3: put all your parcels of food into the steam box then place your steam box over the puia. Step 4: Carefully lift the lid of the box and take you food out, if you don’t do this carefully you could be left with a burn or a scar.

Crystals

It starts out as liquid and hardens in the sun. I used rock salt as my grain, Thea used sugar and Charlotte used normal salt. Thea only added a tiny bit of food colouring so her crystal has turned out to be white. Charlotte added too much food colouring so hers looks black. I added just enough to make mine look green. Theas crystal has improved the most even though hers is supposed to take the longest, 3 weeks.

On Wednesday, the 31st of July, Thea, Charlotte, and I found a way to make crystals. By using hot water and a sort of grain you can grow your own crystals. So far so good. The crystals are working perfectly, they have started to grow in bits and soon the whole thing will be a crystal.

We didn't add sting so it will have to stay on the plate. Everyday we have to add more mixture to the plate to make the crystals grow. I can’t wait until they’re done. I wonder whose will finish first?

Mrs Roil

Mrs Roil

I have known Mrs Roil for a very long time even though this is the first time I have been in her class. Over the years at school I have noticed she is a wonderful teacher that tops everybody else. She has kids of her own so she is very understanding and has a lot of patience.  Mrs Roil has walnut brown eyes on the back and front of her head so she can see everything. They light up and sparkle when she is delighted but when she is angry her eyes narrow slowly. Mrs Roil has sandy brown hair that reaches her shoulders. Although Mrs Roil has to be at school extremely early she always manages to look her best. When she is walking around the class in her jet black boots she looks like she is strutting her stuff like a supermodel. The clothes she wear are very modern and show she has a great sense of style.

Mrs Roils voice explains a lot about her. For instance, when she is stressed and grumpy her voice lowers into a deep tone but when she is in a good mood, her voice rises into a high pitch.  For example, if Mrs Roil receives a gift her tone of voice changes dramatically into a high pitched scream. She acts like she is a grumpy teacher but whenever she growls we know she doesn’t mean it, thats why no one listen and keeps talking. She is a one of a kind teacher because she keeps all our pictures on the wall and will listen to Daniels strange jokes.

Mrs Roil is a lovely teacher and everyone enjoys her company. She is always having a good time and can change everybody's mood as soon as she walks in the room. Mrs Roil is a great teacher. She wants the best for us and our education. She encourages us to compete in more sports and activities. The only time she gets really grumpy is when someone has gotten lower than 5 in their spelling or times table tests. Mrs Roil is my favourite teacher at Parkvale school and I am her favourite student.

Mrs Roil has interests easier to spot than eye spy. She loves it when we do our work but you can see she really enjoys Art and music. When we are determined in our writing she will sometimes play some music off her computer. She has a large range of music but one song that she seems to love is The Champ sung by Nelly. Usually on Wednesday and Thursday Afternoon we are specifically quiet, not so we can listen to music but so we can learn the few techniques of art. Mrs Morton comes in on those days to teach us art techniques. Mrs Roil sits at her desk and sketches. Mrs Roil is a great teacher, I will come and visit her when I have half days at intermediate and I hope she never forgets me. This was the best class so far it will be the one I will always remember.

Black bears

Black Bears
The black bears scientific name is Ursus americanus. It has two sub-species that include the Florida black bear and the Louisiana black bear. Black bears are very adaptable and live in 41 out of 50 states in the U.S but they can also live in Northern Mexico.

Black bears are very common bears. Did you know right now, there are 600,000 bears in north America but there are also 300,000 roaming the forests?. The average lifespan of a black bear is 20-30 years. In that time they can have up to 6 cubs. In one winter they can have up to 3 cubs. Black bears are usually pregnant for 63-70 days. Cubs are born when the mother bear is hibernating, they don’t eat anything until they come out for spring. People say black bears are born blind and that is why they stay in the cave longer.
The black bears behaviour is the same as every other bear. They hibernate for the whole of winter unless they are disturbed, they are excellent tree climbers and they tend to eat a lot of fish. The mother travels with her cubs until they are two, then she forces them to leave. Black bears can make 20 different sounds including grunts, roars, moans and other noises. They can grow 5ft to 6ft tall and can weigh 90 to 270 kg.

The Black bears appearance always looks slightly the same. Their fur colour can be either blue-black, blue-grey, cinnamon, and sometimes very rarely you can find a white, Black bear. They are mainly dark colours so the Black bear can hide from its predators. They don’t have many predators because they are so big, but really they are the smallest out of all 3 species of bear, that’s why their main predator are other bears. Another interesting fact is that Theodore Roosevelt was one of the first people to eat the Black bears raw meat.

Black bears are omnivores which means they can eat meat and vegetation. They would usually prefer berries, roots, grass, insects, honey, fish, carrion, deer, moose calves, garbage, and human food. Most bears that have eaten human food or garbage end up becoming extremely dangerous and are hunted down and killed. Did you know, when a bear hibernates they don’t eat food but they are eating their own body fat and to get enough body fat for the whole of winter means they eat twice as much in Summer and Autumn.

Black bears live in forests, mountains, swamps, and tree holes. They hibernate in different places including brush piles, sheltered spots, caves and burrows. They are usually traveling so they sleep in different places every night. Black bears are very interesting creatures and have lots of funny habits.

Chalk vs Pen vs Internet

This is a video that Thea, Milly and I all contributed to make. This shows what school was like in 1960, 1988 and 2013. Milly had to fill in for Charlotte and she did a great job. This video is about 3 people, Madame Chalk,  Miss Pen, and Mrs Internet that are having an argument about school and what year it was best. We gathered alot of information to make this video so I hope you enjoy.

Term 2 Reflection

Term 2 Reflection

Sport:
Netball has been fantastic this term. We have lost one game and drew quite a few, other than that we have won every game. Our team works great together we are great at finding space, defending, catching. We really need to work on 3 feet though. Our best shooter would be Kate and Charlotte and I work well at defending. I would like it if we had more practice and for our coach to be a little more strict.
Mini ball  has been dreadful. We have lost every game and we were never close to winning either. We have had one practice all term and we never have any subs because practically nobody in our team shows up. We are great at shooting and dribbling but it’s when we get to the other end of the court they just snatch the ball off us so everyone gives up. I am great at catching rebounds and running up and down the court, that’s what my mum says. Hope has to be our best player and she does get the ball a lot but it’s better her than another ball hogging boy.

Art:
Overall art this term has been great. I have learnt to use so many different techniques with Mrs Morton. I feel like I have improved rapidly. I am pretty disappointed in my rata tree because I only had one day to finish it but I tried hard with my draft copy. Sadly my St Basil Cathedral art seemed boring so I didn't try to make it look nice. Other than that I have tried extremely hard this year to make my art look nice and up to standard.

Book electives:
When I first heard about book week electives I thought it was going to be extremely boring. Once I went to the first day about how to make a picture book I sat and listened the whole time. It was really interesting how Oliver Jeffers said the pictures and the writing is as important as each other. I also like working with the water pencils. I wish we could do this more often and hope we could make a picture book in class.

Writing:
Writing was great this term. I learnt a lot of great writers tricks and different ways to start my story. I think my writing has improved a lot and my story about Mrs Roil was my best so far. I would like to have a full day of fiction writing just for fun. Speaking of fun, Mrs Roil rule is you're not aloud to have the word fun in your writing, you have to use something with a little more detail. As I said before writing this term was amazing.

Reading:
This terms reading was quite easy. I feel as though the journals weren't complicated enough. I would like to work on putting more expression in my voice when I am reading. I would like to read books that have reports in them so we could learn some interesting facts. I wouldn't mind if sometimes we could have someone to research as our reading as well.

Overall:
Overall this term has been great the only downside is losing all our mini ball games. I learnt so much more in class. I would like to have some holiday homework so I don’t get lonely playing with my sisters and her barbies. I have improved in all subjects and hope that I can do even better next term. P.E has also been great. The class is very supportive when we play golden child but I would like to play new class games that last longer. Next term I hope the weather clears up so we can actually play sport. Other than the weather this term was great, I wouldn't mind finishing our reading documentary. I wouldn't mind starting a new one as well, just for more work.
